InfoWorld and INBOX - The Email Event Launch ``Save Email'' Auction to Stop Spam

Initiative Utilizes cMarket Technology to Benefit the SpamCon Foundation

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 2004--InfoWorld, a leading weekly business-to-business technology publication (www.infoworld.com), and INBOX - The Email Event (www.inboxevent.com), today announced the launch of an electronic auction to benefit the SpamCon Foundation (www.spamcon.org), a 501c3 public benefit corporation that advocates for the mitigation of spam. The auction to benefit SpamCon takes place from May 17 through June 11, in conjunction with INBOX - The Email Event taking place at the Marriott in San Jose, CA on June 2-4. Companies wishing to donate products for auction or bid on items may do so at: http://emailauction.cmarket.com.
According to IDC, the number of business email boxes in North America has more than doubled over the past five years to reach 232 million in 2004. Rising torrents of spam reaching 8.5 billion spam messages sent daily in North America in 2004 have reduced email's usefulness by forcing users and IT staff to expend significant amounts of time and energy identifying and dealing with spam. (Source: "Worldwide Email Usage Forecast, 2003-2007: Spam and Instant Messaging Take a Bite Out of Email," IDC 2003).

Through its programming, the SpamCon Foundation provides a forum for Internet users, administrators, marketers, anti-spam businesses and activists to collaborate and develop strategies that encourage responsible email marketing. SpamCon Foundation's goal is to allow email users optimal control over the mail they receive.

"The April 19th issue of InfoWorld declared that 'Email is Broken,'" said Paul Calento, vice president of marketing at InfoWorld. "While the InfoWorld Test Center regularly reviews products and solutions designed to stop spam from entering their organizations, solving the problem requires consensus on responsible marketing practices, like those advocated by the SpamCon Foundation. InfoWorld is dedicated to helping senior IT managers who rely on InfoWorld to not only identity top-level IT concerns such as spam, but to make initiatives to solve and alleviate them. This auction is one way to make that happen."

"Email is the Internet's unsung killer application. It's the communication backbone of today's enterprise. But huge cost, return, productivity, legal liability, customer relationship and security issues confront all businesses as they rely increasingly on email for internal and external communication and even data storage," says Martin Hall, INBOX Conference Director. "This auction complement's the mission of INBOX to help enterprise IT professionals, carrier/service provider staff and marketing professionals to learn how to make the best decisions about email implementation, management, security and use in their businesses."
